Time together as a family, walks and trips to the beach had become increasingly important, so the couple decided it was time to make a move. ‘We sold our big house in Hackney and downsized to a three-bedroom apartment in the area, which gave us the funds to look for a weekend cottage,’ says Katy. ‘We focussed on Norfolk, because we had spent time there as a couple before having children and always felt a special connection to the area, and because the colors of the landscape – the soft blues, the natural scrub and miles of golden beaches - remind me of Scotland....

‘We could see that this place was crying out for a country house aesthetic but I also knew that I was incapable of putting that look together,’ says the owner. It was a striking image of a decorative bathroom created by Henriette von Stockhausen that first alerted the client to the interior designer. ‘I contacted Henriette and asked her if she felt she could create a similar bathroom in this house and we went from there,’ she says, adding, ‘During our first year here, we had converted one of the outbuildings so that we could live on site with our teenage son during the renovations....

‘We even clad the outside with blackened cedar so that it blends with its surroundings; it looks like a wood cabin,’ notes Pamela Shamshiri of Studio Shamshiri (opens in new tab) who, with architects Marmol Radziner (opens in new tab), designed the house to also reflect the adventurous spirit of its owners. The collaboration was a close one. ‘There’s a wonderful rapport between our two studios and our clients couldn’t be nicer or more creative people – they are adventurous and exciting and they were very involved with the design process,’ says Pamela....
